QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Asking questions of a government on behalf of electors is an
important part of the role of all members of Parliament.

In the Legislative Council, time is set aside each sitting day for
Question Time.

There are two types of question, those asked with notice and those
asked from the floor of the house without notice.

Questions that require research or lengthy answers are usually put
on notice.

Because unlike the Lower House, the Upper House has few sitting
government ministers, questions are put to the Government Leader in
the Legislative Council who passes them on to the relevant
Minister and Department.

In the Tasmanian Parliament, the Government Leader in the
Legislative Council usually does the best he can to give a full and
appropriate answer to members’ questions.

Question Time in the Upper House has an important role in bringing
matters to the attention of Parliament and the public.

Legislative Councillors welcome suggestions from their electorates
for questions that can be put to the Government.
